More Good Foundation - a Mormon Apologetic organization. Its sole purpose is to register thousands of websites to mislead those seeking information on Mormonism.

What kind of a name is "More Good Foundation"?

The name comes from Joseph Smith's silly assertion that the word "Mormon" translates into "more good." Smith alleged that "-mon" was the Reformed Egyptian word for "good." Thus, by adding the contraction "mor", you have "more good" or "mormon." Smith neglected to explain how the ancient Hebrew/Egyptian-based "Nephites" managed to use a modern English word like "more" as a proper name.

Need I point out the irony of a supposed BYU professor of ancient languages using Smith's silly and obviously bogus concoction for the title of his organization whose mission is to defend the productions of the bogus "translator?"

The "More Good Foundation" is an apologetic organization created by David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue Airways and James Engebresten of BYU. It is heavily contributed to by Allen Wyatt and Daniel C. Peterson - two Mormon Apologists.

They claim:
The More Good Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps Mormons share their beliefs on the Internet so interested people can learn more about Mormonism. It was created in 2005 by David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue Airways, and James Engebretsen, Associate Dean of the BYU Marriott School, as a solution to the overwhelming need for increased positive and accurate information about the LDS faith on the Internet. It is operated by a small team of employees and many volunteers.
Their motto is:
Using today's "Net," we provide the tools, training, and support for Latter-day Saints to share their beliefs on the Internet. We operate over 300 websites, in a multitude of languages, and administer support for a hundred more. We have "joined the conversation" and are ensuring that the everyday Mormon voices are heard. We are making a difference.
Everyday Mormon voices are heard? No, the voices of Mormon Apologists are heard. Defend the faith at all costs.

One of the tactics used by the More Good Foundation is to register thousands of websites surrounding key phrases used by the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormons. These key phrases are such as, "aboutmormons", "explainingmormonism", "mountainmeadowsmassacre", "insidemormonism", "learnaboutmormons", "mormonanswers" and hundreds more.

When you visit these pages you are either presented with a website that is strictly pro-Mormon, or, you are re-directed to the LDS Church's main website.

The websites presented by the More Good Foundation are purely Mormon Apologetic works written by people like - Daniel C. Peterson, Allen Wyatt and other Apologists that work for the LDS Church's "Neil Maxwell Institute" (before known as "The Foundation For Ancient Research And Mormon Studies"). For a list of Apologists, see: http://maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/autho.... Realize this first are foremost : Those that create and contribute to these websites are paid to do so.

One perfect example of the tactics employed by the More Good Foundation is a website called "mountainmeadowsmassacre.com". A quick Google search for "Mountain Meadows Massacre" leads you (beyond Wiki) to the More Good Foundation's website. This site presents the reader with a pro-Mormon Apologetic agenda. Details about the Mountain Meadow's Massacre are withheld and facts are dismissed as Anti-Mormon fabrications.

On mountainmeadowsmassacre.com - it is claimed that the roots of the massacre stemmed from LDS persecution endured in Missouri. This is a blatant lie. There is absolutely no evidence that any of the Francher/Baker wagon train members were from Missouri - and they all departed from Arkansas before the death of Parley P. Pratt.

The website then provides the reader a list of links - which all end up on Mormon Apologetic websites. The reader is always only presented with the Mormon Apologist view and is never provided with the alternate.

This is just one example of how the More Good Foundation presents a one sided view of information about the Mormon Church - and the history of the Mormon Church.

The More Good Foundation has registered hundreds - if not over a thousand - of Internet Domains in order to trick, confuse or provide a one sided Pro-Mormon Apologetic version of Mormonism.

Reader beware of the More Good Foundation and the tactics used by this organization. The More Good Foundation is nothing more than a propaganda machine. It exists to trick unsuspecting visitors into a version of Mormonism that is carefully worded and crafted by Mormon Apologists. It floods the Internet with domain names in order to present websites at the top of search engines - again, to trick unsuspecting visitors.

To find out if a website you are on is run by the More Good Foundation, use Whois Source at http://www.whois.sc and type in the domain name and you will find the following:

Is The More Good Foundation A Money Laundering Foundation?

The More Good Foundation is a "non-profit organization that helps Mormons share their beliefs on the Internet so interested people can learn more about Mormonism. It was created in 2005 by David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue Airways..."

What do they do to share their Mormony beliefs? They buy a lot of domains on the internet. They "own" (registered and parked on) over 1300 web domain names , of which 400 are pro-LDS websites. From tax records, it appears in 2007 alone they spent over $140,000 purchasing domains and websites, most of which are believed by the foundation to paint Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in a negative light.

In 2012, at the height of my national media blitz, I was approached by an unnamed individual to buy out my blog (at the time called "prozac-ville"). I declined, and eventually the original blog name was taken by FAIR supporters. I renamed it, eventually, to what it is called today.

The organization states that “While the Foundation is fully supportive of the Church and its mission, it is not directed by or funded through the Church; no Church funds are used for the Foundation.”

However, Futuremissionary (http://futuremissionary.com/) reports that their tax returns tell a different story (http://futuremissionary.com/more-good...). Apparently, Futuremissionary has found that ''starting in 2009, there were also yearly donations of between $100,000 and $200,000 from “LDS Foundation of the LDS Church.” Over 3 years, donations from this foundation totaled $450,000.''

I also received information derived from 990finder about donations to the More Good Foundation (see below). Effectively, this foundation looks a little like a money-laundering organization for doing the LDS church bidding. However, I won't go as far to say that it is a facade for LDS activity, but I am sure that David Neeleman coordinates with a GA regularly about the foundation's activity. I recall when I was a young lad that the owner of Living Scriptures, Inc, Jared Brown (my neighbor and one-time temporary employer), had LDS general authorities on the phone or even at business meetings/conferences to discuss the direction Living Scriptures was taking. At least Mr. Brown bragged about it to me. Thus, I would be very surprised if Mr. Neeleman wasn't also conferencing regularly with his LDS elders.

Of interest is that in 2009, 2010 and 2011 the LDS church was the largest single donor. Previously, it had been Neeleman himself. (The data is shown below.)

Another note of interest, FAIR, the apologetic organization run by Scott Gordon, received $2,500 from More Good in 2006. (See this PDF (http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_...) and this PDF (http://990s.foundationcenter.org/990_...) for more data on FAIR -- p.3 of Attch A.)

If you total the contributions and subtract the expenses for salaries (payouts) in the latter years, you will see that most of the foundation money goes to pay salaries of the directors and officers. Very little seems to go elsewhere. So the LDS church is actually mostly donating to pay the salaries of the foundation employees. Why would they do that?

Now, it can be argued that the LDS Foundation of the LDS Church is not owned by the LDS Church. The address listed for this group is 150 Social Hall Ave, SLC Suite 500.

Not only is the building the same, but the same Suite 500 is also the listed address of Beneficial Life Insurance Co. in 2010, owned by Beneficial Financial Group, a Deseret Management Corporation, which is a wing of LDS incorporated. In other words, we can be very sure that these donations to MGF are from LDS inc.

Church Donation:
?andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp;andnbsp; $450 total

Notice that they stopped having a fund for buying domains and websites (about $112k/yr) and it looks like they replaced it with a fund for “contract writers.” Might they be buying websites with content and calling that writers? The last year, they had the same budget ($112k).

Funded by Church?
“We support The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in every way, but we are not owned or operated by the Church.”
How is the Foundation Funded?
While the Foundation is fully supportive of the Church and its mission, it is not directed by or funded through the Church; no Church funds are used for the Foundation. Our funds come through the good graces of individual donors who are interested in seeing us fulfill our goals and make a positive difference with LDS information.”
Is The "LDS Foundation" Owned By The Mormon Church And Funding The More Good Foundation?

Here is a link to a Des News article (from 2010) about the "LDS Foundation" making a $500,000 contribution to the Utah Symphony and Opera:

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/70...

According to the article (emphasis added):
The LDS Foundation receives its funding from the church's business entities and makes contributions to community nonprofit organizations.
The article also gives the full name of the foundation as "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation." Thus, it does not appear to be a private foundation, and it clearly is very connected to the LDS Church -- it IS an LDS Church entity. The MGF's claim that it receives no money or support from the LDS Church is a bald lie.

The article also states that Deseret Management Corp. (an LDS Church entity) oversees the LDS Foundation.

And I found this particular quote interesting in light of the LDS Foundation's $450,000 in contributions to the MGF (emphasis added):
"Typically, when they do major giving, they [i.e., LDS Foundation] like to be quiet and in the background," she said. "Because they are making this so public, they want to be part of this community effort. It's a huge endorsement to our work and what we're doing."
I guess the LDS Foundation chose to "be quiet and in the background" when it came to contributions to the MGF.

Some information from Deseret Management Corporation's web site, About DMC:
Deseret Management Corporation (DMC) is a for-profit arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. All DMC companies operate under a unified mission, which is “to be a trusted source of light and knowledge reaching hundreds of millions of people worldwide.” DMC focuses on providing content and services through all of its media and service offerings that are consistent with this mission by treating all with dignity, respect, humility and integrity.

Deseret Management Corporation was organized in 1966. Today it owns and oversees life insurance, media, and hospitality businesses including Deseret News, KSL Television and Radio and Deseret Book.
http://deseretmanagement.com/about-us/leadership-team/ This I already knew. DMC is the holding company for all the church's for-profit companies. From their leadership bios:
Roland A. Radack, VP Community Relations

Roland Radack currently serves as Vice President of Community Relations at Deseret Management Corporation (DMC), where he has worked in various capacities since September 1996. In connection with his current position, he also serves as Executive Director of the company’s charitable giving foundation, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation. Prior to his work at DMC, he served as Vice President and Treasurer of Bonneville International Corporation, a national commercial broadcast and media communications company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he worked for almost fifteen years. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Mr. Radack received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from the University of Utah.
So, the foundation is "the company's charitable giving foundation." It's clear that "LDS Foundation" is used as a shorthand for the foundation's full name, so it certainly appears that MGF's major source of funding is the LDS church and its business holdings.

That's the only conclusion I can reach; ergo, the statement on MGF's website about not receiving anything from the LDS Church is a lie. In addition, we now know the LDS Church has made (and probably continues to make) a significant investment in apologia.
